Piano

  • Reading-based methodology in Classical, Jazz and more

Traditional piano lessons are available for children and adults of all levels. This approach introduces note-reading early in the learning process. Beginning students typically learn to read music and play songs from a method book recommended by their instructor. They also learn supplementary pieces, such as pop songs, show tunes, or whatever the student may request.

At the Intermediate and Advanced levels, students expand their Music Theory knowledge, performance repertoire, and technical skills. At this point, sometimes students choose to specialize in a certain genre, such as Classical, Jazz, Pop, or even Music Composition.

We have many highly qualified piano teachers on staff, so we can find the right fit for each student’s ability and interests.

Traditional lessons are currently only available as private lessons, offered in increments of 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 1 hour.

  • Improvisatory piano classes for ages 4–6

Play-a-Story Piano is an age-appropriate and creative way for young children to learn basic piano skills. The class takes budding musicians on a musical journey in which you and your child travel through a storybook world. It uses the piano as its mode of travel, creating sounds, melodies, harmonies and rhythms to express the story. In fact, students literally create their own musical soundtrack to each specially created storybook and video. Children learn different musical sounds, motifs, styles, shapes and dynamics, creating a comprehensive, improvisational vocabulary.

Play-a-Story is the perfect bridge to more formal music instruction.

  • Playing-based lessons for ages 6–adult

We are the only local music school to offer the revolutionary piano method, Simply Music. This program is perfect for beginners or students who have had less than a year of lessons.

Simply Music is a playing-based method. The reading process is temporarily delayed to first develop a repertoire of 30-40 engaging pieces in various styles, including Classical, Jazz/Blues, Contemporary, and Accompaniment.

In the same way that all children learn to talk before they learn to read or write, students learn to “speak” the language of music before reading it. Through this natural learning process, students can focus on the physicality of playing more involved pieces than the typical beginner repertoire.

Simply Music lessons are offered in a group and private format. Our Simply Music teachers have undergone extensive training and are licensed by the Simply Music organization to teach this unique method.

Drums & Percussion

Fairfield School of Music gives future percussionists the chance to find their own unique beat. Our highly-trained instructors teach rhythm fundamentals, proper technique, and can specialize in rock, pop, or jazz styles. Students can take private 30, 45-minute or 1-hour drum lessons.

Because they usually study on a drum kit in the studio, students should be at least eight years of age so that they can reach the pedal and cymbals.

Voice

Voice students of any age will find their niche here. Fairfield School of Music offers both private and group voice lessons and encourage students to explore various styles — from pop songs to show tunes to classical arias. Our instructors teach proper singing technique alongside repertoire, so students learn how to strengthen and support their voice, expand their range and take the stage with confidence.

Students rehearse and perform their recital pieces with a professional accompanist. Many choose to also showcase their talents at church, in musical theater productions, or with bands formed by their peers.

In addition to our 30, 45-minute and 1-hour private voice lessons, group voice lessons are also offered by arrangement. Create your own group class with one or more of your friends!

Guitar & Bass

At FSM, guitar and bass students can choose to specialize in either acoustic or electric (or both!) After learning the basics, they can focus on whatever style they prefer — rock, pop, jazz or classical. Each student develops proper technique, as well as skills in theory, reading and ear-training. Students also learn how to jam alongside other musicians and how to perform solo. Our highly trained teachers are all active performers and boast a wide variety of styles and backgrounds, so students can easily find an instructor to fit their particular interests.

For our youngest guitar students (ages 4-7), we recommend enrolling in Loog guitar lessons. These lessons are taught on the Loog Mini Acoustic Guitar, which has just 3 strings and is perfect for small hands. Tuned to the highest 3 strings on a guitar, young students can learn chords with ease and build skills that will easily translate to a 6 string guitar down the road.

In addition to our 30, 45-minute and 1-hour private bass lessons and private guitar lessons, we also offer group lessons by arrangement. Create your own group guitar or bass class with a friend or family member!

  • Students must supply their own guitar, bass or Loog guitar for lessons. If you need assistance in finding a suitable instrument, please contact us so we can assist you.

Ukulele, Mandolin & Banjo

Lately, the ukulele has experienced a resurgence, and it’s not hard to see why. This small, four-stringed instrument is cheap, portable, relatively easy to learn and, best of all, fun! It proves a sound choice for beginners and for more advanced musicians looking for a light-hearted diversion.

Mandolin and banjo are traditionally bluegrass instruments but are often heard in other genres such as rock music these days. Equally fun to learn, our instructors will get you picking in no time, whether you're just starting out or looking to hone your existing skills.

Private ukulele, banjo and mandolin lessons are available in our standard 30, 45-minute and 1-hour increments.

Violin, Viola, Cello & Double Bass

The pursuit of violin, viola or cello opens up a world of performance opportunity — from solo to chamber music to school or community orchestras. The warm tone of these instruments also makes them especially enjoyable to play alone in the privacy of your home.

Fairfield School of Music offers private violin, viola and cello lessons in our standard 30, 45-minute and 1-hour increments. Students as young as five may begin violin study, while study of the cello, a much larger instrument, usually begins around ages nine or ten. For students who prefer folk music over classical, we also offer fiddle lessons. Though the fiddle is the same instrument as the violin, fiddle playing involves a markedly different style, such as bluegrass, country or Celtic, and often involves improvisation.

In addition to our 30, 45-minute and 1-hour private violin lessons, we offer group violin lessons by arrangement to students who find a team experience more motivating. Create your own group class with one or more friends for an extra fun learning experience!

Saxophone, Flute,
Clarinet & Oboe

Fairfield School of Music offers private woodwind lessons to students of all ages, each tailored to the particular needs and interests of the student. Our university-trained instructors are experienced educators and performers who participate in bands, ensembles and orchestras. They assist students in improving skills for school band or in developing more advanced skills to join community groups or perform solo.

All flute, saxophone, clarinet, bassoon and oboe lessons are offered in our standard 30, 45-minute and 1-hour increments.

  • • In order to begin private flute lessons, students should be at least seven years of age, though some younger students may start with a curved-head model developed for that purpose.

    • Private saxophone lessons and clarinet lessons may begin after students have a developed lung capacity as well as the physical strength to handle their instruments. Therefore, we do not recommend beginning these instruments prior to eight years of age.

    • The bassoon and the oboe are both double-reed instruments, the mastery of which usually proves too challenging for younger students. We recommend that students begin private bassoon or oboe lessons at age 11 or older.

Harmonica

The harmonica is a fun instrument to keep in your back pocket and be ready to play whenever inspiration strikes! Mastering basic techniques like breath control and positioning can take some time, but with proper instruction and practice, anyone can learn this iconic instrument.

Fairfield School of Music offers private harmonic lessons in 30, 45 minute and hour-long increments. Students can learn to play blues, pop, rock or folk tunes, or whatever genre strikes their fancy. After some time, students will be ready to jam with their friends, sit in at a local Open Mic, or spice up their own piano or guitar performances with colorful harmonica solos!

Trumpet, Trombone & French Horn

At Fairfield School of Music, we tailor brass lessons to your needs. Our university-trained instructors perform in everything from jazz ensembles to big-band groups to orchestras, so they can assist students in improving skills for school band or in developing more advanced skills to join community groups or perform solo.

Trumpet, Trombone and French Horn lessons are available in our standard 30, 45-minute and 1-hour increments.

  • Students should be at least nine years of age to study a brass instrument. This ensures sufficient lung capacity.

Songwriting/Composition

At Fairfield School of Music, aspiring songwriters and composers can get inspired and discover tools and tricks of the trade.  Whether you're a beginning songwriter or an advanced composer, our expert faculty can help you take your writing to the next level. Coaching is available for all ages in private weekly lessons or group formats.

Music Theory

Music Theory is a complex and fascinating subject unto itself.  All our students learn music theory appropriate for their age, level and interest, but for students who wish to dive even further into the topic, weekly theory lessons may be desirable.  Students may choose from weekly private or group theory classes.
